If a site visitor has a version 4.0 or later browser,
the plug-in is most likely installed. You have probably seen some
Web sites that have a Flash Splash page as an entertaining introduction.
A "splash page" is a page that loads first, upon site
entry and plays a flashy animated introduction movie of some sort.
When the movie is finished, the page may automatically forward to
the "real" home page, or there may be an "Enter Site"
link provided. I am not particularly fond of these because the novelty
wears off quickly and some visitors will never enter the site! The
unrealistic to think that everyone who does not have the Flash Player
is going to take the time to go download it just to watch your splash
page. It is very likely that the site visitor will just leave and
never come back. The type of Web site you are designing will be
a key factor in your decision to use a Flash splash page or not.
If you do decide to use a splash page, it would be a good idea to
provide a link to "Skip The Flash Introduction".
Another thing to keep in mind is that Flash versions change and
so do Flash player versions. A user may be prompted to upgrade to
a newer version of the plug-in even if it is not needed to view
the current Flash movie. This is a minor interruption.
In addition to splash introduction pages, Flash is great for tutorials,
animation and just plan COOL little movies on any web page. They
can be funny or very professional in nature.
