Unit 4 - Working with Text

For this unit, I created my banner and logo for this portfolio. Below, are the steps I went through to create create several banners with matching logos before finally deciding which to use.

I started out with this photograph that I took in the butterfly house at the Memphis zoo.

  1. I cropped out a portion of it to use as my background layer.
  2. I used the rubber stamp tool to create a second butterfly up higher on the image.
  3. I used the text tool to create my text and applied the flag shape to the text.
  4. I selected 60 pt. Georgia ref as my font and applied bold.
  5. I locked all the layers except for the background and adjusted the brightness to darken the image. This was necessary in order for the font text to show up well.
  6. I optimized the image as a medium quality .jpg.
I cropped out a section of the photograph with the intention of using it as my banner for my home page and a smaller version for all the inner pages. This one is 577 X 161 pixels. I applied an arc shape effect and a drop shadow to the text. I applied an emboss effect to this banner lift it just a little.

Alternatively, I used the text tool to create this logo for the top of each of my inner portfolio pages at this time. I used Book Antigua text with a drop shadow. I applied the 2 pixel border with the Stroke effect, set at inside.
I created this banner for my portfolio home page, as the match. I felt more width would be appropriate for the home page while the smaller, wrapped version would work well for the inner pages. I applied the 2 pixel border with the Stroke effect, set at inside.

For this banner, I cut pictures of animals out with the marquee tool, feathered at 25 pixels. I saved this as a .jpg as the file size was smaller and the quality was better than as a .gif. I did not create a matching logo for this one, because it is long and narrow. It could easily go on the top of each page. If I would have decided to use this one, I would not have used a logo at all.

At last I decided to use this one. Many techniques went into this one. I used a photograph of a leopard I took at the Memphis zoo. I cropped it and lowered the opacity. I applied a drop shadow to my text. I filled a color layer with yellow and played with the opacity unit I got the look I wanted.

I decided to use the leopard banner and logo because I have a lot of zoo pictures in my examples. I created buttons out of paw prints to top off my zoo motif.

I decided against using a plan text banner and logo because this is a Photoshop portfolio. Although you can create all types of custom art work with Photoshop, it is most famous for working with photography.
